Geopolitics
For Sudan, this era is the Condominium. In January 1899 an Anglo-Egyptian agreement 'restored Egyptian rule in Sudan but as part of a condominium', designating territory south of the 22nd parallel as the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan; in practice the British governor-general ran it 'as if it were a colonial administration' (LOC1991_CONDO). After Sir Lee Stack was assassinated in Cairo in Nov 1924, Britain ordered all Egyptian troops and officials out of Sudan (LOC1991_CONDO). The 1936 Anglo-Egyptian Treaty left Sudan's status unresolved, and Sudanese nationalists split over union with Egypt versus independence (LOC1991_NATIONALISM). In Feb 1953 London and Cairo signed an accord granting Sudan a three-year transition to self-government after Naguib accepted Sudanese self-determination (LOC1991_INDEP). The 1902 administrative line that later underlies the Halaib dispute also dates from this era (IBS18_1962). On the Nile, the 1959 treaty notes that a 1929 Nile Waters Agreement 'only regulated a partial use of the natural river' (UNTS6519_1959) [1929 terms not read directly – VERIFY].
