Geopolitics
Lay in the north-eastern foothills of the Nuba Mountains. Its rulers 'encouraged the immigration of settlers and established their suzerainty over a considerable area'. It survived in semi-autonomy after the Turco-Egyptian conquest and was integrated into Condominium local government (HD2011, intro p.7). Takana places the rise of Tagali in the 17th century, alongside the Fur and Lake Chad sultanates (p.129), and names Sinnar and Tagali as Darfur's eastern neighbours (p.173).
Culture
A small Muslim state in the Nuba Mountains whose royal family 'derives its origin from the marriage of a Ja'ali holy man with an indigenous princess' (HD2011, intro p.4).
Economy
Regional context only: the Funj 'penetrated the Nuba mountains, one of the principal slave-raiding regions', and reduced 'the newly established Islamized kingdom of Takali' to subordinate status. Captives from the non-Muslim 'hill-Nuba' were settled around Sennar as the sultan's slave bodyguard (GHA V ch.7, p.177). Whether Taqali was tributary is disputed (Ewald 1983, cited in fn.24). Nothing read describes Taqali's own production or trade.
