Geopolitics
'Nominally tributary to, but effectively independent of, the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan'; Ali Dinar answered the Ottoman call to jihad in the First World War, raided French Chad, threatened British Borno and tried to stir revolt in Kordofan; he was defeated and killed in 1916 and Darfur 'fully incorporated into Sudan' (GHA VII ch.12, p.283).

Economy
After the Mahdist defeat, Ali Dinar asked Khartoum to recognise him as sultan 'in return for loyalty to the government and payment of an annual tax'. Wingate agreed, writing that the government 'does not need money' and that the tax was a sign of loyalty (Takana 2016, pp.34–35). No source read describes the sultanate's internal economy or trade.
